Cases of Arrests and Detention of LGBTIQ People

Criminalisation

Challenging laws that oppress and criminalise.

Cases of arrests and detention of LGBTIQ people

In Malaysia, LGBTQ and gender-diverse individuals face dual criminalisation under both national civil laws and 52 state shariah (Islamic) laws that target sexual orientation, gender identity, expression, and consensual acts.

Each year, we monitor such arrests, detention and censorship against LGBTIQ people in Malaysia to better visualise and understand the state of criminalisation from the Malaysian legal framework which enables systemic oppression, including arbitrary arrests, detention, conversion practices, judicial caning, event raids, and harassment and violence from state actors, service providers, and the public both online and offline—all without any legal protections against discrimination or violence.
