Honouring PRIDE Safely: A Guide for Participants, Organisers, and Allies in Malaysia

Organising LGBTQ+ events can be risky in Malaysia on any given month. It is even more amplified during PRIDE month. But that doesn’t mean we stop showing up. It means we prepare smarter.

This month alone, JFS has documented disruptions of at least 5 events because of police investigations, prejudicial police reports by the public, venue pulling out due to fear of police investigations, and more.

Because discrimination still exists. So we need to stay ready, not silent.

These restrictions on freedom of assembly and expression relate to the broader institutionalised discrimination that we face. Because of this, some event organisers have understandably decided to postpone, change or cancel their events.
